The first two days of ministry in South Africa have already been so impactful. We have been serving with Beats and Books, an after-school program that helps children grow in music, literacy, numeracy, leadership, and discipleship. Their heart is not only to help students succeed academically, but also to help them know Jesus and become leaders in their communities.

I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with a 10 year old named Hope to prepare for her geography exam for the end of the school term. It’s incredible to see the eagerness in these kids.

One of the most beautiful things has been getting to know the kids personally. Their joy is contagious. They are full of energy, laughter, and love, and they welcomed us so quickly.

I have also been so encouraged by the leaders at Beats and Books. They know these children by name, know their stories, and intentionally pour into them every day. They are raising up young leaders and discipling them in such a Christ-like way. It is clear that this ministry is not just about helping kids pass exams, although that is important. It is about helping them understand who they are, what they are capable of, and who God created them to be.

One of the most powerful moments has been praying for foreigners living in South Africa who may have to return to their home countries. Many have left places like Zimbabwe and other neighboring nations seeking work, safety, and opportunities for their families. Some are now facing uncertainty about whether they will be allowed to stay. As we worshiped and prayed together, I was moved by the compassion these students have for people carrying such difficult burdens. It reminded me that the Church is called to care for and love people regardless of where they come from.
